The white cloud looks like harmless steam until I breathe it in, then the acrid vapor burns my lungs and throat. The smell of battery acid smoldering on a hot engine is something you never forget. Continuing past the vapor I take in the scene. To my left is a large white SUV, it’s front end smashed so severely part of the headlight harness is touching the base of the now shattered windshield.
